Located within Atlantic County, Egg Harbor Township dates back to the late 16th century, previously called New Weymouth in 1693. On May 13, 1761, the township's western boundary was formed with the region known as Great Egg-Harbour Township.
Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, a Dutch adventurer, gave Great Egg Harbor its name in 1614 upon discovery of the meadows that were coated with a variety of bird eyes, hence the name "Egg Harbor."
The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the earliest occupants of what would become Egg Harbor Township. They spent their summers on the higher terrain around the cedar marsh that is now Bargaintown Lake, including the Patcong Creek, where they fished and gathered shells.
The land was originally part of Gloucester County, but in 1837 the township was separated into its own along with Galloway, Weymouth, and Hamilton. Since then, 10 other districts have broken apart from what was originally Egg Harbor Township, such as:
Egg Harbor Township is home to three wildlife management areas, Malibu Beach WMA, Pork Island WMA, and Lester G. MacNamara WMA.
Malibu Beach WMA boasts about 95 acres of land and water within Egg Harbor Township between Great Egg Harbor Bay and Broad Thorofare. In the marsh, you'll find a variety of bird species within the wetlands that are all protected by the environmental protection agency.
Across Malibu Beach, you'll find Pork Island WMA that covers about 867 acres of land separated into four islands. Lastly, the Lester G. MacNamara WMA is known as the oldest WMA in the state, established in 1933 and stretches across four different municipalities in New Jersey.
