The Celebrity DUI / DWI Roundup is a monthly report that covers recent DUI arrests involving noteworthy celebrities, as well as updates on pending DUI cases involving celebrities.
While the Celebrity DUI / DWI Roundup highlights the details of DUI arrests involving celebrities, the point of this article is not meant to simply “hype up” the fact that a celeb has been arrested. Instead, this publication is meant to highlight that there are many legal options available to drivers arrested on DUI charges.
This month’s DUI Roundup includes a list of celebs who were recently arrested on DWI charges including Roger Lewis of the New York Giants, former pop star Aaron Carter and the son of the Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen.
New York Giants wide receiver Roger Lewis was arrested in Reynoldsburg, Ohio on OVI charges on June 4th, 2017 after police stopped his vehicle for speeding and tinted windows.
We reported on Roger Lewis’ arrest in last month’s Celebrity DUI / DWI Roundup here.
However, the 23-year-old wide receiver recently struck a plea bargain with prosecutors in which Lewis’ OVI charge was dropped in exchange for him pleading guilty to driving in marked lanes and operating a vehicle with illegally tinted windows.
According to reports from TMZ, the DWI defense attorney representing Lewis claimed that the vehicle stop that ultimately led to Lewis’ arrest was unlawful and argued that officers compelled Lewis to submit to field sobriety tests by suggesting that the tests were mandatory.
John Bowlen, the 31-year-old son of Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, was arrested on DUI charges after being pulled over in the Paso Robles area of Southern California last month.
According to reports, John was stopped by California Highway Patrol on Sunday, July 30th, at approximately 2:00pm after multiple drivers called 911 to report a reckless vehicle on the 101 Freeway.
John was reportedly weaving in and out of traffic at over 100mph before police caught up with him. The officers that stopped John’s vehicle ultimately suspected that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and arrested him on the scene. He was taken to the nearby San Luis Obispo County Jail late Sunday where he was booked on two counts of misdemeanor DUI.
A bench warrant was issued out of Arapahoe County, Colorado for John Bowlen on August 4th because his arrest on Sunday reportedly violated his probation stemming from a conviction in a domestic violence case from 2016.
Derek Fisher was arrested on suspicion of DUI after being involved in an accident on the 101 Freeway in June.
According to court documents, Fisher’s attorney recently appeared in court for the ex-NBA player’s arraignment (Fisher was not present) and pleaded “not guilty” on his behalf.
Fisher is due in court later this month to proceed with the DUI case.
Aaron Carter was arrested for possession of marijuana and suspicion of driving under the influence after being pulled over in Georgia recently.
According to TMZ reports, police officers in the area had received an alert about a Chevy Suburban without tags that was allegedly swerving all over the road and was seen crossing the median.
A Habersham County Sheriff stopped Carter after witnessing him pull into the parking lot of an AutoZone in a vehicle matching the description of the car that had been reported to local officers.
Official police reports state that Aaron refused a breathalyzer test and refused to allow law enforcement officers to test his blood or urine in order to determine if he was intoxicated.
According to TMZ, Aaron’s representative said that "the car was swerving because it was out of alignment not because he was drunk."
Aaron is due to appear in court for arraignment later in August.
A DUI conviction can lead to negative consequences including a license suspension, prison time and expensive fines. Many drivers facing DUI charges simply plead guilty to the charges and accept the consequences without considering any other options.
However, not all DUI arrests lead to a conviction.
