The city of Hoboken is located within Hudson County and has been ranked the 745th highest populated area in the country. With more than 42,400 inhabitants per square mile, Hoboken is the third most densely inhabited municipality in the United States among cities with populations greater than 50,000.
In the 17th century, Hoboken was founded as part of the Pavonia, New Netherland colony. Colonel John Stevens built the city in the early 1800s, initially as a resort and then as a residential community. It was originally a part of Bergen Township and then North Bergen Township before becoming a distinct township in 1849 and a city in 1855.
The name originated from the tribe of Native Americans that nicknamed the area "land of the tobacco pipe," which in turn, translates to "Hopoghan Hackingh." Colonel John Stevens then rephrased the name to what it's called today, Hoboken.
Hoboken was formerly an island bordered on the east by the Hudson River and on the west by coastal lands at the foot of the New Jersey Palisades. Henry Hudson was the first reported European settler to inhabit the land in 1609. Soon after is when the land merged with the province of New Netherland.
Colonel John Stevens created the first waterfront as a part of the Manhattanites resort in the early 1800s. Upon the completion of the waterfront, a ferry began operating and traveling back and forth from Manhattan to Hoboken. In 1832, Sybil's Cave, a beautiful natural spring water cave opened to the public as a popular attraction and later became an iconic piece of history when Edgar Allan Poe wrote about the cave in his famous short story, "The Mystery of Marie Roget."
Hoboken is home to an assortment of music, art, and cultural events held year-round. Some of the most popular events include:
