In the municipality of Kearny, New Jersey, South Kearny is an industrial region and unique area in the west side of Hudson County, near the north end of Newark Bay. The area is located on the peninsula known as New Barbadoes Neck, which also borders two more nearby areas, Uplands and Kearny Meadows. The Passaic River runs along its western boundary, just across from the Ironbound section of Newark, which is also heavily industrialized.
South Kearny is considered a hub for several means of transportation to, from, and around the city. The Newark and New York Railroad Bridge, as well as the Morris Canal and the Newark Plank Road, are all part of the Central Railroad of New Jersey and run through the neighborhood.
The Newark and New York Railroad Bridge runs through Downtown Newark, Communipaw, North River, Hackensack River, and Passaic River and has been operating on and off since 1869. The passenger line was created as a commuter transportation system for Jersey City and Newark residents to be able to travel to New York through a terminal and the ferry.
The Morris Canal boasts 107 miles worth of waterways that connect two industrialized canals, Easton, PA to the Delaware River, and Phillipsburg, NJ to NYC and Newark. The canal has been used since the early 1800s but railroads have slowly taken over that commuting route for developmental industries.
The Newark Plank Road passes through Paulus Hook, Hudson Waterfront, and into Newark and its surrounding areas. The plank road was made up of wooden planks put beside each other on a roadbed, as the name indicates. The Bergen Point Plank Road, the Hackensack Plank Road, and the Paterson Plank Road all traveled to the towns that bear their names.
