During the 19th century, the area where Springfield/Belmont is situated once was a "shtetl" which was the name of a small town holding a population of Ashkenazi Jewish people. This populations of Jews were dominant in the area up until the mid-1900s where many African Americans moved from the Carolinas and Virginia. Today, the demographic is mostly African American and has been a neighborhood tremendously affected by what is called white flight.
Along Martin Luther King Boulevard, originally known as High Street, in Springfield/Belmont, there are several historic structures. V A visitor would view the Art-Deco extravagance of Arts High School, the classically inspired St. Agnes Greek church, the grand Victorian architecture of the Krueger-Scott Mansion, the Beaux-Arts Feigenspan Mansion, a Neo-Classical former synagogue, and lastly the Moorish Revival Prince Street Synagogue if they walked along the street from north to south. The Krueger-Scott mansion, built for a German brewer, was the most expensive property ever erected in Newark. It is being planned to become an American cultural center.
The Greater Newark Conservancy has renovated and turned the 1884 Prince Street Synagogue, formerly the site of Congregation Oheb Shalo into a nature center for Newark. The old synagogue's yard has been transformed into a lovely community garden that boasts a pond with tons of fish and other reptiles.
Lastly, the Newark Public Library located in Springfield provides tons of sources of entertainment for families to take advantage of. Along with the library, residents also have a large new retail complex with tons of stores, restaurants, and a local theater.
