History

Egg Harbor City is located in Atlantic County and was founded in 1854 as a refuge for German Americans coming from Philadelphia. During the Know-Nothing movement, an anti-immigrant violence group that emerged as a major political party in the 1850s, many refugees found safety in Egg Harbor City for over 50 years. 

On June 14, 1858, sections of Galloway Township and Mullica Township were incorporated as a city by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature and was then reincorporated a year later. 

Geography

The city has a total area of 11.42 square miles of both land and water, according to the United States Census Bureau. The cities borders include: 

• Galloway Township
• Mullica Township
• Washington Township
• Burlington Township

Demographics

We have statistics from both the United States Census in 2000 and 2010, so we will be sharing both statistics to see how much the demographics have changed over a decade of time. 

Census 2000

There was an estimated 4,545 people, 1,658 households, and 1,150 families that lived in Egg Harbor City with a population density of 409.2 individuals per square mile. Of the 1,658 households: 

• 34.2% had children under 18 years of age
• 43.7% were married couples
• 20.3% had a female head of household with no male present
• 30.6% were individuals living together that were not related

Census 2010

In 2010, there was a decrease in population with about 4,243 people, 1,593 households, and 1,075 families in the city with a population density of 388.1 per square mile. Of the 1,593 households: 

• 30.2% had children under 18 years of age
• 39.0% were married couples
• 21.3% had a female head of household with no male present
• 21.3% were individuals living together that were not related

Local Activities

Egg Harbor City is known for its beautiful wineries. The top two favorites are: 

• Renault Winery; the oldest running winery in the state of New Jersey
• Sulvin Farms Winery; opened in 1985, it has 11 acres of grapes and produces over 1,000 cases of wine annually.
