Cumberland is known as an unincorporated community within Maurice River Township in Cumberland County. The community has a small number of households that do not exceed over a few hundred and are primarily located along Route 49.
With only two retail shops and a few cottage businesses, Cumberland is nearly entirely a residential and agricultural area. For work, most locals travel to Millville, Vineland, Bridgeton, or one of the county's three prisons.
A large amount of Cumberland is made up of the Peaslee Wildlife Management Area, encompassing over 25,000 acres of land, and is known as the second-largest WMA in New Jersey state. The program offers a variety of trips, special events, and educational outdoor programs for residents and visitors to take part in.
The Cumberland United Methodist Church is also a staple in the community, with a large number of residents attending as well as the graveyard located onsite. The New Jersey Department of Roads and Highways also has its office within Cumberland, close to the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Company.
Cumberland's precise boundaries, like those of the other smaller towns in Maurice River Township, are undetermined. Surprisingly, Cumberland does not have its own Zip code and has all mail sent to its neighboring community, in Millville. As a result of this, as well as the community's isolated rural location and lack of retail establishments, many Cumberland County people are ignorant of its presence.
Because the United States Census Bureau does not distinguish the demographics of the numerous communities within Maurice River Township, the precise population of Cumberland is unclear, including the number of homes within the community. To determine the actual borders of the town, an extensive examination of historical titles and other records held in the Cumberland County Court House going back at least several hundred years would be required.
