The unincorporated communities and census-designated place of Mays Landing are located in Hamilton Township in New Jersey. The population of Mays Landing was about 2,135 people, according to the United States Census of 2010. Mays Landing also held the county seat for Atlantic County and was named after Captain George May, who was known for sailing the Great Egg Harbor River in 1740 and later purchasing the land in 1756. 

History

Mays Landing was an important factor in the creation of Hamilton Township in the late 1800s. More than 200 boats were built in the Great Egg Harbor River between 1830 and 1880, using timber from local woods and iron from Weymouth foundries. Mays Landing was responsible for half of them. However, due to a scarcity of appropriate wood, wood shipbuilding began to fade towards the end of the century.

Geography

The total area of Mays Landing is 1.885 square miles, with 1.660 square miles made up of land and 0.225 square miles made up of water. The unincorporated community is about 20 miles west of Atlantic City and is close to the community known as Mizpah, with only a 5 miles radius. 

The community of Mizpah was first established as a Jewish colony that was created for a group of cloak makers from New York. It started with only 100 settlers, 30 households, and a factory that has since grown into its own flourishing community. 

Climate

The summers in this area are hot and humid, whereas the winters are normally moderate to chilly. Mays Landing has a humid subtropical climate, termed "Cfa" on climate maps, according to the Köppen Climate Classification system.
