Located in Hudson County, Bayonne is a city situated between New York Bay, Kill Van Kull, and Newark Bay. Originally a township, Bayonne was reincorporated as a city on March 10, 1869, by the New Jersey Legislature. 

History

Initially occupied by Native Americans, the Dutch claimed the area that is today known as Bayonne when Henry Hudson discovered the Hudson River.  The name Bayonne is thought to have originated with Bayonne, France, where Huguenots stayed for a year before the establishment of New Amsterdam, according to Royden Page Whitcomb's 1904 book, First History of Bayonne.  However, this theory is regarded fictitious because there is no reasonable evidence for it. 

Bayonne became one of the nation's greatest crude oil refining centers, with Standard Oil of New Jersey's facility – that had developed since its founding in 1877.  The Bayonne refinery strikes of 1915–1916 sparked important legal upheaval, with largely Polish American workers staging labor strikes against Standard Oil of New Jersey and Tidewater Petroleum, demanding better pay and working conditions. Four protesting employees were killed when police-protected strikebreakers opened fire on a gathering.

• 25.79% Hispanic or Latino
• 10% other races
