The area was named after the founder of St. Aedan's Church, Monsignor Roger McGinley, who constructed the historic church in the early 1900s. Irish immigrants drove most of Jersey City's expansion from 1850 to 1910, and many of them were attracted to Journal Square to work as controllers and operators of the trolleys that started there.
