Located in Cumberland County, the city of Millville is one part of three principal cities in New Jersey including Bridgeton and Vineland. The city was incorporated in 1801 formed by portions of Fairfield Township and later reincorporated in 1866 following a change in boundaries.
Information on Millville dates back to the early 1700s, where a sawmill was said to have existed in the area as well as a boating dock, public road, and bridges. The Union Mills Tract was bought by Joseph Smith and Henry Drinker in 1790 with a total of 24,000 acres purchased. They founded the Union Estates Company, which assembled timber mills along the Maurice River and built a dam to power them.
Joseph Buck, a Revolutionary War soldier who fought under General George Washington, was part of a group that bought land in the region in 1795 and sketched up the designs for Millville.
