Located in Cumberland County, Vineland is a city with a total population of around 60,724 residents as of 2010. Founder and developer Charles K. Landis purchased a 30,000-acre plot of land in 1861, which followed with an additional purchase of 23,000 acres a decade later. His goal was to build an idealistic society based on the growth of agricultural industries and progressive opportunity. Soon after, the first home was built in 1862, as well as a training station that traveled across two major states.
Vineland was founded as a temperance town, prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages. Purchasers of land in Vineland were obliged by Landis to construct a home on the site within a year of ownership, to clear and farm 2.5 acres of land, as well as plant both flower and shaded trees between each home.
