Historical Background

The neighborhood of New Durham is near the Union Turnpike and Bergen Turnpike in the North Bergen Township portion of Hudson County. The neighborhood sits on what was previously part of an early American community surrounded by the Three Pigeons. The Three Pigeons was known as a popular meeting spot in Bergen Township where special events and occasions were hosted during the revolutionary period. It remains a historical landmark and a famous spot to visit.

Transportation

New Durham was a train station on the New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railways into Pavonia Terminal, which was located immediately north of the Susquehanna Transfer. The Pavonia Terminal is located along the Hudson River and is situated near the Harsimus Cove. When the Erie Railroad relocated its transport services to the neighboring Hoboken Terminal in 1958, the station shut down. Commuter trains were also run from the terminal by the New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railway, as well as different streetcars, ferries, and the subterranean Hudson and Manhattan Railroad. In the late 20th century, the demolished terminal was converted into a Newport district. 

Pavonia was among five-passenger railroad stations that bordered the Hudson Waterfront's western bank from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, as well as the others in Weehawken, Hoboken, Exchange Place, and Communipaw. Today, the only station that is continuing to operate is in Hoboken. 

Demographics 

East of New Durham is the Meadowview section of North Bergen that extends to the Municipal Building  nestled between the many cemeteries that characterize the area, including:

• Macphelah Cemetery
• Weehawken Cemetery
