Cherry Hill is a township located in Camden County in New Jersey. The township holds the following unincorporated communities as well as their estimated populations as stated by the United States census in 2010:
The area where Cherry Hill is located was once home to the Lenni-Lenape Native American tribe. In the late 17th century, William Penn who was one of the first settlers from England inhabited an area named Colestown and build a community of homes. The town was later founded on February 25, 1844, and later became a part of Camden County.
After WWII, the township's population exploded, and it continued to do so until the 1980s. The population of the town is now steady, with new development mostly taking place in enclaves of personalized luxury homes either via the restoration and adaptive reuse of commercial and industrial sectors.
How did Cherry Hill gain its name? It all began with a farm property owned by Abraham Browning that later was renovated to become an inn named Cherry Hill Inn. Developer Eugene Mori branded various facilities with the Cherry Hill name, including the Cherry Hill Inn and Cherry Hill Lodge hotels, Cherry Hill Apartments, and Cherry Hill Estates, adding to the popularity of the name.
During the establishment of the townships' post office, the United States Postal Service wanted to name the town Deltown. After the controversy of the name, Cherry Hill was then chosen by the citizens of the town in 1961.
Cherry Hill features 51 public parks, as well as three Camden County parks. Children's playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, hiking trails, and sporting fields can be found in the majority of the parks. One of the most popular parks in Croft Farm, originally built in 1752 and is considered a historic landmark in Cherry Hill.
