Located within Jersey City, Greenville is made up of a primarily residential community but offers so many beautiful parks for families to take advantage of. A few of the most popular parks for visitors are:
Before Greenville became its own designated area, it was a territory that belonged to the Raritan and Hackensack Indians during the 17th Century. In 1647, New Netherland immigrants settled on the land, and later, in 1661, after more immigrants migrated to the region, it was renamed, Bergen. Nearly 200 years later, in 1863, the area has since been split, and Greenville Township was incorporated from portions of Bergen.
Many working-class Irish Catholic families, as well as other ethnic groups, settled in Greenville. With the loss of manufacturers and the collapse of independent train lines in the 1950s through the 1970s, the area's demography altered considerably. East of Kennedy Boulevard, the neighborhood was later occupied by African Americans, whereas west of Kennedy Boulevard, the district is more diversified, with a large Filipino community. Greenville also has a substantial Hispanic and Egyptian society, and many of the neighborhood's elderly Irish residents still live there.
Greenville went through major renovation and revitalization in the early 2000s to help infrastructure and overall economic wellbeing for residents and businesses in the area. Today, the region remains one of the more affordable neighborhoods for families compared to their surrounding communities of Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Alon with economic improvements, an increased amount of gentrification continues to help make Greenville more of a culturally enriched community.
