Known as New Jersey's largest municipality, Hamilton Township is located in Atlantic County with the largest area of land, totaling 110.90 square miles. The township was incorporated on February 5, 1814, by the New Jersey Legislature.
The history of Hamilton Township is strongly intertwined with the Great Egg Harbor River and its tributaries. In 1756, George May, for whom Mays Landing is called, established a shipyard and trade station on Babcock Creek.
In 1837, years after Hamilton Township began incorporated, it was then detached from Gloucester County and created a new county called Atlantic County. The township was named after Alexander Hamilton and was broken into pieces of land from nearby regions to form other townships.

The New Jersey Pinelands Commission regulates the western three-quarters of the township, placing significant restrictions on development in that area of the township, which remains a pine forest with a decidedly untouched quality, with other areas classified as a Rural Development Area.
