Located in the northern section of Hudson County, the township of Weehawken is home to over 12,000 residents, with the numbers slowly climbing since the year 2000. The name Weehawken is said to have originated from the Algonquian language of the Lenape Indian tribe. Both the Tappan tribe and the Hackensack tribe were said to have inhabited the land, and the name can be translated to "maize land" and a few others that describe the Palisades.
The township's recorded history dates back to 1609 when Henry Hudson traveled down the North River in the Half Moon on his third expedition to the New World and anchored in Weehawken Cove. At the time that Hudson docked on the newly found land, the Hackensack and Tappan tribe were occupying the area. They were forced out by colonists from the province of New Netherland, who began settling on Hudson's west bank at Pavonia in 1630.
Over decades and centuries, Weehawken has flourished as a community and has been a part of many monumental time periods in history. For example, Weehawken was utilized as a lookout for patriots during the American Revolutionary War to keep an eye on the British, who were stationed in New York and dominated the nearby canals.
Today, it has turned into a wealthy residential neighborhood full of historical places, landmarks, monuments, and more.
