The Ironbound: A Local Guide

The Ironbound was historically named "Dutch Neck," "Down Neck," and "the Neck" due to its geographical shape and curve along the Passaic River.

History

The neighborhood's current name was said to have originated from the once-booming metal industry during the construction of several different railroads in the area. The Balbach Smelting & Refining Company was one of many metalworking businesses that were responsible for building today's transportation system. 

In the 19th century, the Ironbound had a diverse population, including Germans, Lithuanians, Italians, and Poles, the same as today's population. As the population of Lithuanians grew, so did the establishment of churches such as the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ built in 1894 and Trinity Church built in 1902. The Polish population was responsible for the establishment of St. Casimir's Church in 1908. 

Community Culture

Due to the neighborhood's culturally diverse community, there are tons of arts, culture, dance, and music festivals that are hosted year-round. A few of the most popular are: 

• Portugal Day Festival - attracting almost half a million people annually, this festival celebrates the Portuguese culture. 
• Ecuadorian Day Festival - a parade is held annually to support Ecuadorian culture and is run by a variety of local businesses and politicians. 
• Brazilian Day Festival - visitors enjoy an assortment of restaurants, street vendors, music, and more that embodies Brazilian culture. 

Parks & Recreational Facilities

Both Independence Park and the Riverfront Park & Waterfront offer tons of attractions, special events, and things to do daily. Independence Park is known for hosting an annual Italian Festival, and the Riverfront Park is made up of several small parks along the Passaic River.
