The neighborhood's current name was said to have originated from the once-booming metal industry during the construction of several different railroads in the area. The Balbach Smelting & Refining Company was one of many metalworking businesses that were responsible for building today's transportation system.
In the 19th century, the Ironbound had a diverse population, including Germans, Lithuanians, Italians, and Poles, the same as today's population. As the population of Lithuanians grew, so did the establishment of churches such as the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ built in 1894 and Trinity Church built in 1902. The Polish population was responsible for the establishment of St. Casimir's Church in 1908.
