University Heights is a neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey, and is located in Essex County. Rutgers University (Newark Campus), the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), the New Jersey Medical School (Rutgers), and Essex County College are among the four academic institutions inside its boundaries and houses a total of 35,000 students are enrolled in the schools. University Heights Science Park, a major research center to be placed between their campuses, is being developed by the colleges.
In 2002, the Public Health Research Institute and Science Park High School both moved to Warren Street. One of the first companies to set up shop there was BioTrials, a French biological research company, and the company is housed in a skyscraper standing 7 stories high on Norfolk St. that was recently completed.
University Heights was a relatively affluent residential neighborhood of Newark prior to this development of both Rutger and NJIT around the 1960s. The Paul Robeson Galleries at Rutgers University and the Weston Museum in NJIT's Van Houten Library, which houses relics from inventor Edward Weston, an early rival to Thomas Edison, are also found in the area.

The neighborhood is served by Newark's Light Train stations on Washington Street which connect to Manhattan through the PATH and NJTransit rail systems at Newark's Penn Station.
University Heights went through an economic decline in the 1960s and later went through a revitalization of the area including an expansion of the schools in the union and other residential developments to add housing. The Essex County Parks Commission recently established and built Veterans Memorial Park on the site of a parking garage as part of a renovation of the adjacent county complex, which included a new parking lot, sidewalk improvements, walking paths, and multiple building renovations to the Hall of Records, and Essex County Court House, generating a more enticing entry to Downtown Newark.
